que tuvo la primera idea.

Recordaba la primera vez, muchos años atrás. Él empezaba su trabajo en la casa de socorro del pueblo, así la llamaban allí, y había estado presentándose a todos y cada uno de los pacientes que le fueron a visitar aquel día. Mucha gente mayor con dolores de huesos, catarros, cansancio general…, pero, sobre todo, personas con ganas de contar cosas y que les escuchasen.

No tenía la sensación de que allí fuese a tener demasiados problemas.

Al final del primer día, la auxiliar entró con una cajita en la mano.

– Lo han traído para usted – le dijo.

– ¿Quién?

– Lo ha traído el cartero, pero no tiene remitente. Sólo dice «para el doctor».

– Pues vamos a ver qué puede ser.

Abrió la caja, del tamaño de un cubo de Rubik, y sacó su contenido, dejándolo sobre la mesa.

– ¿Una manzana? -preguntó la auxiliar.

– Eso parece.

Estaba perfectamente envuelta en una redecilla de espuma y, debajo de ella, una nota: «una manzana al día mantendrá al doctor lejos de tu vida».

– ¿De verdad no sabemos quién la envía? – preguntó el doctor, extrañado.

– Pues no. El cartero sólo vino a dejarla y no ha dicho nada más.

Metió la manzana en uno de los cajones de su mesa y se dispuso a cerrar la consulta.

– Supongo que lo averiguaremos tarde o temprano.

Al día siguiente, al entrar en aquella habitación, el olor de la fruta se había apoderado de toda la estancia. Era un olor dulce, fresco. Abrió el cajón, y allí estaba, aún tersa, brillante. «¿Quién va a querer envenenar a un médico con una manzana? Las madrastras ya no hacen esas cosas…, ¿no?», pensó mientras le daba un mordisco. La manzana crujió mientras sus dientes iban clavándose sobre ella, liberando un riquísimo líquido que chorreaba por la comisura de sus labios. «Está muy dulce. ¿Quién habrá sido?»

Cuando llegó la auxiliar, la consulta seguía oliendo a fruta fresca.

– Me la he comido – le dijo, antes de que ella pudiese articular palabra – Olía tan bien esta mañana cuando he entrado, que no he podido resistirme.

– Y sigue oliendo muy bien – contestó ella.

– ¿Hay muchas fruterías en este pueblo? El resto de la fruta debe ser espectacular si las manzanas son así de dulces.

– Pues hay bastantes. Tenga en cuenta que aquí, la mayoría, se dedica a la agricultura: frutas, hortalizas, verduras…, lo que se pueda en cada época.

– En fin, habrá que trabajar un poco. Vamos a ver qué tenemos hoy…

Y abrió la consulta, como cada día.

Poco a poco fue conociendo a la gente del pueblo conforme iban pasando por allí, pero el misterio de la manzana no hacía más que acrecentarse, porque cada día, casi al finalizar la hora en la que veía a los enfermos, llegaba el cartero con la cajita de cartón y la manzana envuelta en su redecilla de espuma, con aquella nota: «una manzana al día mantendrá al doctor lejos de tu vida».

Después de muchos años, cada día, el cartero pasaba por allí y hacía la misma entrega. Nunca supo decir quién era el remitente de aquella cajita. «La dejan allí, en la oficina de Correos, con ese cartelito que dice “para el doctor”, y nosotros, ¿qué vamos a hacer? ¡Pues entregársela a usted! Esto es un pueblo pequeño, y nos da lo mismo hacer una entrega sin sello ni nada, sobre todo si es para el doctor, que se encarga de mantenernos saludables. ¿Y si esa manzana le está manteniendo a usted sano?» Nunca lo había pensado así. Aunque sí tenía claro que aquellas manzanas eran las más dulces y jugosas que había probado en su vida.

Pero un año, de repente, el tiempo cambió. Comenzó a hacer frío y a llover como nunca antes. Hubo riadas que inundaron las calles del pueblo y las cosechas quedaron anegadas en barro; apenas se pudo salvar algo. Aquello fue una catástrofe. Muchos ancianos murieron de tristeza al ver sus campos destrozados y sus cosechas malogradas. Durante más de tres meses sólo hubo barro en las calles y silencio en las casas. El doctor se unió a la gente del pueblo para limpiarlo todo, cada mañana, achicando y eliminando lodo de todos los rincones.

Fueron días duros. Apenas pudo abrir la consulta, así que atendía a la gente allí donde se cruzaba con ellos: un banco, en la puerta de su casa, apoyados en un coche, en mitad de la calle… Por supuesto, los carteros tampoco podían hacer su trabajo con normalidad. Las entregas se demoraban o, simplemente, no se hacían porque no había nada que entregar.

Al cabo de varias semanas, el pueblo estaba limpio, como si nada hubiese ocurrido. Nada, salvo porque los campos estaban desiertos y las cosechas habían desaparecido bajo un manto de fango.

Una semana con la consulta abierta, y seguían viniendo los mismos vecinos a por recetas, a por la vacuna de la gripe… Pero ya no había manzanas. Llevaba varios meses sin recibir aquella fruta fresca y sabrosa que cada día, desde hacía años, había estado trayéndole el cartero.

– Doctor, debería ir al cementerio – le dijo un día la auxiliar mientras cerraban la consulta. Ella solía visitarlo a menudo, porque casi toda su familia estaba allí. Además, conocía a la mayor parte de la gente del pueblo y le gustaba ir a mostrar sus respetos a todos aquellos habitantes silenciosos de vez en cuando.

– ¿Por qué?

– Tal vez lo sepa cuando esté allí.

Aquellas palabras misteriosas despertaron su curiosidad, así que, en lugar de irse a casa, decidió pasar antes por el camposanto; un lugar silencioso, tranquilo, pequeño, donde los dos cipreses que se levantaban en la puerta vigilaban, enhiestos, como dos guardas suizos, el descanso eterno de todos los que allí estaban.

Caminó a lo largo de la avenida principal, observando las lápidas en silencio. Apenas podían oírse allí a algunos pájaros jugueteando entre las ramas de los árboles, o en el suelo, picoteando cualquier cosa que pudiese ser comestible. Pero entonces, un nicho llamó su atención. Estaba en medio de otros muchos, pero el mármol que se había puesto sobre aquel hueco de la pared tenía forma de manzana. Se acercó.

Alrededor había flores frescas, y la placa parecía relativamente nueva. Miró las fechas impresas. Efectivamente, aquel hombre había muerto una semana antes. Entonces leyó la inscripción: «Herminio Quain Preto. Frutero.» Y debajo de las fechas de su nacimiento y su defunción, un epitafio: «Una manzana al día mantendrá al doctor lejos de tu vida».

No recordaba haber atendido nunca, en todos los años que llevaba allí, a ningún Herminio. Ni siquiera por una gripe. Resolvió que era aquella persona quien le mandaba las manzanas cada día a la consulta. Averiguó dónde vivía y decidió hacer una visita a quien viviese en su casa en esos momentos.

Cuando llegó, al ir a llamar a la puerta, se dio cuenta de que estaba abierta, algo normal en aquel pueblo: las puertas solían estar abiertas, como invitando a pasar a cualquiera que llegase con buenas intenciones.

Dio un par de golpes con los nudillos en el marco de madera.

– ¿Hola? – dijo desde fuera, alzando un poco la voz.

– Pase, pase. Estoy aquí dentro, en el salón.

Una señora delgada, vestida de negro, con un gran moño en la cabeza, se balanceaba suavemente sobre una mecedora de madera que crujía levemente con cada movimiento. La tele estaba puesta, pero aquella mujer no parecía estar prestándole atención. Giró la cabeza para ver quién la visitaba.

– ¡Doctor! ¿Qué le trae a usted por aquí?

– ¿Es usted la esposa de Herminio? Herminio, el frutero.

– Sí, claro. ¿Qué se le ofrece?

La señora aparentaba paz. Una paz sosegada que le otorgaba a su voz un tono lejano y, a la vez, suave y agradable al oído; como de sinfonía.

– En primer lugar, querría expresarle mis condolencias. Hoy he visto que Herminio murió hace poco, y nunca, desde que estoy aquí, lo vi por la consulta.

– Herminio era un hombre sano y fuerte…

-…y generoso. Eso era lo siguiente que quería hacer: agradecerle, al menos a usted, todas esas manzanas diarias. Nunca supe quién las enviaba, y nadie quiso decirme nada si es que alguien lo sabía. Mi auxiliar ha sido quien me ha puesto sobre la pista a través de su lápida.

– Sí, las manzanas. Él decía que si se las enviaba al doctor, jamás tendría problemas de salud; ellas le mantendrían alejado a usted de él.

– Pero, entonces, ¿él no comía manzanas?

– Sí, le encantaban; pero para él era más importante enviárselas a usted.  Claro que después vino lo de las inundaciones, ya sabe…, estuvo quitando barro con nosotros aquí delante de casa hace poco…

Era cierto. Lo recordó de repente. Dos o tres semanas antes había estado justo delante de Herminio y su mujer, limpiando aquella calle.

– Siento no haberlo sabido antes. Tal vez podría haber hecho algo.

– No se preocupe, doctor. Nosotros ya somos muy mayores. Tarde o temprano el cuerpo se apaga, ¿y qué le vamos a hacer? No hay manzanas para un cuerpo ajado.

– Me hubiera gustado agradecerle personalmente esa fruta riquísima de todos estos años.

– ¿Quiere ver la última manzana que Herminio preparó para enviarle antes de las inundaciones? Como empezó a ponerse pachucha y a arrugarse, porque con la lluvia no se la pudo enviar, tiró el papel con aquella nota de siempre, y escribió con rotulador sobre ella: «semanas sin manzana ni doctor te llevarán de cabeza al cajón».

La señora le dio la fruta al doctor. Estaba arrugada y casi seca, con aquellas palabras escritas en trazos temblorosos, alrededor, sobre la cáscara. Y a pesar de la apariencia desgastada, aquella pieza de fruta seguía oliendo dulce y fresca.

– Así era Herminio, doctor. Escribió su epitafio cada día en las manzanas que le mandaba a usted y, antes de irse, escribió mi epitafio en esta. Por supuesto, ya he dejado encargado que a nadie se le ocurra poner tal frase en mi lápida. ¡Qué horror! Sólo espero, doctor que, sabiendo lo que sabe ahora sobre las manzanas de Herminio, entienda que yo prefiera no volver a mandárselas. ¡Le echo mucho de menos!
