El pequeño Dani nació fuerte como un roble, pero tras tres horas de pruebas y exámenes, el doctor entró en la habitación donde sus padres esperaban nerviosos y les dijo que había un pequeño problema: el niño había nacido con un cromosoma de más, y eso le haría tener algunas necesidades especiales y un aprendizaje algo más lento que el resto.

Su madre jamás entendió que aquel bebé que tenía en sus brazos, con aquellos ojazos oscuros y profundos como el universo, que le miraban fijamente y contemplaban todo como aprehendiéndolo, pudiese tener algún problema. «Un cromosoma de más. El problema lo tendremos nosotros, que tenemos uno de menos…», decía siempre.

Pero su padre no pudo soportarlo. Jamás llegó a aceptar que su hijo fuese especial. Para él no lo era, ni lo sería. Pensaba en el futuro, cuando ellos ya no estuviesen, y en ese niño con cuerpo de adulto que nunca llegaría a ser… como los demás. Y se marchó. Se marchó una mañana para no volver.

A partir de entonces, su madre decidió que en aquel mundo de dos no habría tristeza jamás; que los problemas se solucionarían con la mejor de las sonrisas posibles, y si había que llorar, se lloraría, pero para volver a reír más fuerte al final de las lágrimas. No hay carcajada más luminosa que la que explota después de un llanto, ni sol más brillante que el que dibuja un arcoíris después de una tormenta.

Dani crecía, aprendía, conocía a gente, se relacionaba, se enfadaba, quería, como cualquier otra persona; tal vez a otro ritmo, tal vez con un poco más de ayuda, tal vez con algo más de esfuerzo, pero con mucho más tesón, más ganas, más trabajo duro, y, sobre todo, más sonrisas.

Porque Dani siempre tenía una sonrisa para todos, un abrazo, un apretón de manos, un saludo…

Cuando cumplió dieciséis años su madre se dio cuenta de que tenía un don especial, otro, con la pintura. Sentado en la mesa de la cocina podía pasarse horas pintando, poniendo color a trozos vacíos de papel, despertando la luz que esconden todos los lienzos en blanco. Y decidió llevarlo a clases particulares, a que aprendiese la técnica.

Antes de llevarlo al taller donde había decidido inscribirlo, avisó a su profesor: «Dani es un niño especial. Se dará usted cuenta cuando lo vea. Tal vez necesite un poco más de paciencia con él, pero le aseguro que no tendrá a nadie con más ganas de aprender todo lo que le enseñe».

El taller era una sala con grandes ventanales por los que entraba siempre la luz del sol. Desde ellos se podía ver una inmensa arboleda que refulgía, dorada en otoño y esmeraldada* en primavera. Las mesas, colocadas todas junto a los ventanales, estaban siempre bañadas por una luminosidad prístina, limpia.

Durante los primeros días de clase, las tardes habían sido grises, frías, casi apagadas; como si el sol se hubiese olvidado de extender su gama de colores sobre el mundo. Pero poco a poco, día a día, la luz había comenzado, de nuevo, a ganarle la batalla a las sombras y el aire fresco había ido trayendo sobre sus hombros todos los brillos que las horas iban dejando caer por los rincones conforme iban avanzando.

Dani y su anciano profesor pasaban las clases solos, cada uno en una mesa, junto a los ventanales, pintando y hablando. Se reían, inventaban historias, se escuchaban… pero, sobre todo, pintaban.

«Tiene usted razón: su hijo es especial. Él tiene un don que poca gente posee: es un coloreador; alguien capaz de pintar colores que nadie ve. Yo apenas le estoy enseñando nada; más bien él me enseña a mí. Es usted afortunada, así que sólo puedo darle las gracias por haberme dado la oportunidad de conocer a Dani en estos últimos coletazos de mi vida. No sabe lo feliz que me ha hecho.» Estas fueron las palabras que el profesor le dijo a su madre una tarde, cuando fue a recogerlo al final del taller. Pero no llegó a entenderlas del todo.

Y el profesor murió, un día brillante y luminoso de invierno en el que Dani pintaba en su casa, junto a la ventana. Y Dani creció, siguió pintando casi cada día, y empezó a impartir un taller de pintura, igual que su viejo amigo, en aquella sala donde la luz era siempre como una sinfonía, llena de matices y notas que se entretejían derramándose suavemente a través de las ventanas.

Los años fueron pasando. Aquel niño especial se había convertido en adulto; un adulto independiente con un taller de pintura al que, un día gris, frío, casi descolorido, entró Paula por primera vez, acompañada de su madre.

– Verá usted que Paula es una niña especial. Es… – se interrumpió azorada, incómoda.

– …como yo – terminó Dani la frase, con una gran sonrisa en su rostro.

– No quería decir…

– No se preocupe, no hay problema. Todos somos especiales. Sólo hay que saber aceptar las limitaciones de cada uno y potenciar las virtudes, ¿verdad, Paula? – terminó diciendo mientras miraba a la niña.

Ella sonreía y miraba la escena con la mirada limpia de los doce años y unos grandes ojos marrones y brillantes.

– ¡Ya verás cómo nos divertimos! – terminó por decirle mientras la cogía de la mano y le decía a su madre que no se preocupase por nada.

Los días volvieron a ser luminosos, brillantes… Y Paula y Dani se hicieron amigos, y pintaban. Pintaban mucho…

Un mediodía gris, mortecino y pesado, la madre de Dani, ya muy anciana, lo llamó. Estaba postrada en cama desde hacía algunas semanas, porque apenas le quedaban fuerzas, pero la habían colocado junto a la ventana de la casa por la que entraba más luz, para que pudiese ver la calle desde allí.

– Dani, cariño – le dijo con apenas un hilo de voz, agarrándole la mano -ha llegado la hora. Mamá tiene que irse, pero no estés triste. Iré a un sitio en el que te estaré esperando siempre, queriéndote mucho más y velando por ti. Tú has sido toda mi vida y ya sé que podrás cuidarte muy bien, porque lo has hecho conmigo estas últimas semanas. Recuerda ser buena persona con todos, aunque a veces no se porten bien contigo porque no comprendan que eres como ellos. No permitas que te digan lo contrario. Y no dejes que nadie apague esa luz que tienes en el corazón, que es la que me ha estado iluminando siempre a mí. ¿Me has entendido?

Dani asintió en silencio. Miró a los ojos a la mujer que le había dado la vida, la que le había hecho el hombre que era. Unos ojos que irradiaban paz, alegría y mucho amor. Luego miró por la ventana y la luz fría y apagada que estaba llenándolo todo. Le dio un beso a su madre y salió de la habitación.

Al cabo de unos instantes volvió con su bloc de dibujo y sus colores, se sentó a los pies de la cama, y empezó a pintar.

Su madre lo miraba en silencio, como perdiéndose en el tiempo, alejándose lentamente. Observaba cómo iba seleccionando colores y los extendía sobre el papel en blanco, y entonces entendió las palabras que le dijo el viejo profesor aquella tarde en el taller: «Él tiene un don que poca gente posee; es un coloreador…»

Un rayo de luz se había posado sobre el bloc de Dani, y parecía estar copiando los colores del papel más allá de la casa, afuera. A través de la ventana, el mediodía fue iluminándose poco a poco, a la vez que él seguía pintando. Era como si sus colores fueran los que el mundo adoptaba conforme los iba plasmando; y aquel mediodía gris comenzó a ser brillante, dorado, cálido…

– De manera que esto era lo que quiso decirme tu profesor; que tenías la capacidad de darle color al mundo. Aunque mi corazón ya lo sabía, pero ahora lo entiendo mejor. ¿Y Paula…?

Dani la miró de nuevo a los ojos y asintió.

– Cariño, te quiero. Gracias por regalarme tus colores y enseña a Paula a usarlos muy bien. Siempre estaré orgullosa de ti, no lo olvides.

Y fue cerrando poco a poco sus ojos, mientras su alma se alejaba por un camino inundado de la luz y los colores que su pequeño había pintado, esta vez, sólo para ella.

Una lágrima rodó por el rostro de Dani y cayó sobre el dibujo, emborronándolo. Dejó el bloc sobre la cama y fue a abrazar por última vez a su madre.

Cuando la luz se posó sobre aquella lágrima del dibujo, fuera, comenzó a llover. Unas nubes grises y frías cubrieron el cielo y, durante un rato, estuvieron llorando junto con Dani.

Después, el sol consiguió aparecer tímidamente por entre las nubes y asomarse a aquel papel sobre la cama; entonces, suspendido en el aire, surgió, poco a poco, un inmenso y brillante arcoíris, alejando las nubes, dejando un cielo límpido y fresco, como recién pintado…

Un coloreador. Eso había sido desde que nació, y seguiría siéndolo, siempre.

*Esmeraldada es un adjetivo que no parece existir, así que, gracias a mi amigo Joaquín, he decidido usar como algo que brilla de color verde esmeralda. Si del oro tenemos dorado, de esmeralda, esmeraldado.
